Nearly a third of the country will soon be off limits for California state employees to travel to on the taxpayer dime unless their trip is deemed essential, such as sending emergency assistance in response to a natural disaster. The travel restriction come August will cover 17 states that have enacted anti-LGBTQ laws since 2015. Monday, June 28, on the 52nd anniversary of the Stonewall riots that kicked off the modern LGBTQ rights movement, Attorney General Rob Bonta added Arkansas, Florida, Montana, North Dakota, and West Virginia to the Golden State s no-fly list. Four of the states all enacted laws specifically targeting transgender youth athletes, while North Dakota repealed protections for LGBTQ university students.

Ryland Whittington joined California Attorney Rob Bonta and state legislators during a news conference in San Francisco announcing the new travel restrictions, which add the five states to a dozen others already subject to the ban on state-funded and sponsored travel, pursuant to Assembly Bill 1887.
