AROUND THE FCS Big Sky schools (and Dixie State) opened the truncated 2021 spring football season Saturday, the same day that No. 1 North Dakota State saw its school-record 39-game winning streak snapped.
The top-ranked Bison fell to Missouri Valley rival Southern Illinois, 38-14 for NDSU s first loss since 2017 and worst loss since joining Division I in 2004. The Bison are now 2-1 and 1-1 in Missouri Valley play, tied with the Salukis in the conference standings.
Elsewhere in the FCS top 25, Dixie State made good use of its Division I debut with a dominant road upset of fellow FCS newcomers and Western Athletic Conference (non-football) rival Tarleton State, which drew a No. 22 national ranking following a rout of FBS New Mexico State in El Paso, Texas.

The New Mexico State University football team will take a stab at something completely different Sunday, taking on Tarleton State at the Sun Bowl in El Paso. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
It’s a long-awaited moment for the Aggies, who did not participate in fall football because of the coronavirus pandemic. It’s the first of two spring games for NMSU, which will also host Dixie State at the Sun Bowl on March 6.

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Hollywood doesn’t have a scriptwriter for what the McNeese Cowboys have endured the past six months and hit its high point so far on Saturday night.
McNeese Football is writing it for them.
Cody Orgeron sprinted from 19 yards out in double-overtime to give McNeese a 40-37 win over Tarleton State in the first college football game in a spring season since the 1890s.
A global pandemic, two major hurricanes and a team without a home or facilities for 5 ½-months, the Cowboys have overcome every roadblock, bump in the road, naysayers, and what not. Trailing 31-17 with less than three minutes to play wasn’t about to stand in their way.
