Rafael Devers crushes Yankees in 6-2 Red Sox win

Photo by Billie Weiss/Boston Red Sox/Getty Images Tonight sucked. The Yankees lost 6-2 with their ace on the hill, making the best possible outcome of this weekend a four-game split. Gary Sánchez left the game with a back spasm. Rafael Devers hit two home runs to bring in five runs. And the game took almost four hours. It feels like I’ve written the same recap over and over again this year the starter was fine but not great. The offense couldn’t come up with a big hit, or even a medium hit. The viewing experience left me tired and irritable. Rinse, repeat. Let’s just get into the recap.

New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox: Lineups, how to watch

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports The New York Yankees have gone 9-3 in their last 12 games, winning four consecutive series against teams in the playoff hunt (the Mariners, Astros, Red Sox, and Phillies). This, of course, has all happened while losing their two primary left fielders to injuries as well as their first baseman, two replacement outfielders, and several bullpen and back-end rotation members. And oh, right they lost their best player, their third baseman, their ace’s personal catcher, and their best reliever to a rash of COVID. Credit where credit is due: The replacements have stepped up. Rougned Odor has been the American League’s second-best hitting second baseman for the past month. Since being recalled, Greg Allen has hit .417, Estevan Florial has a 1.232 OPS, and Ryan LaMarre has provided three key hits, including last night’s walk-off. The pitching has been among the league’s best in July, and even Gleyber Torres has finally begun hitting home runs again.

He’s been a great addition to the staff this year and his weekly “Holding It Down” column is one of the reasons you should subscribe to our EDGE+ premium product. This is a very important time in fantasy leagues, with the MLB Trade Deadline going down next Friday at 4 p.m. ET. We’re likely to see a bunch of big names being moved, which we’ll discuss in our live Circling the Bases broadcast tonight (Thursday) at 8 p.m. ET on the NBC Sports EDGE YouTube and Twitch pages. From those deals will come opportunity, perhaps for young players or those who are next in line on the depth chart for save chances or at-bats. It makes sense to anticipate how these situations play out, but hopefully we’ll have some noteworthy moves to discuss when we re
