that. i mean, you know, my abiding memory of paul ryan will be joe biden laughing at him during a debate, which as far as i know is unprecedented in american political debating. that was the you know, it was an economic discussion that brought out the word malarkey which had never appeared in a presidential or vice presidential debate before. yeah, with the donald trump thing, you know, there s a story about a blind pig and an acorn, but i think, you know, with his kind of ferrell predator instinct for political danger exactly. i think trump was right. every time ryan would present one of these budgets, everybody else in the republican caucus would hide behind the drapes rather than attach themselves to it because they knew what political poison it was. that s exactly right. you saw it as two moments. the bush social security privatization fight and the ryan budget where there s an uncommon
so true. paul ryan rose to national prominence, brooke, rose to the speakership on the strength of what the ryan budget, what was the underlying principle there? our debt, we were spending too much. our debts were getting out of control. we needed to make hard choices to reel those in. that was in 2010. we have some of that sound. let me play some of that. this is from a few years ago, aka yesteryear. what we have here is a spending gusher that will keep on gushing and they have no plan to get this fiscal house in order. we are can cutting spending. ever heard that type of statement around this town before? we really do believe that the value of this republican majority has been a change to this culture. we want to balance the budget. they don t. we want to restrain spending. they want to spend more money. we think taxpayers have given enough to washington. who who who is leading
many different things, cancer research, things that are quite popular. these are not programs that are perceived only to benefit a few. there was a time when the president himself recognized the danger of this kind of thing, this is back in 2012. here is the president then tweeting about the ryan budget. what has changed? well, i don t know that the president has a grip over his own budget. his team is careening from one place to another. certainly i can tell you i ve been out in rural counties in oregon. i have a town hall in every county. i ve been in a dozen republican counties since january, and people are infuriated with the republican leadership. but you re a democratic senator. of course you re going the say that. it s very strange. in 2009, when i was first
