SOUTHBURY — Ryan Anthony Rutledge, 17, passed away unexpectedly on April 5, 2021. He was the beloved son of Anthony and Valerie (Kuehn) Rutledge, and twin brother of Patrick Francis Rutledge. Ryan was a junior at Pomperaug High School achieving high honors, and enrolled in numerous AP courses. When he wasn t studying, he was quite the athlete playing every sport imaginable. At school he played lacrosse, football, golf, weight lifting and was on the ski team. He wasn t just talented in sports though; some of his other talents included playing three instruments fluently by ear, watching and investing in the stock market, solving a Rubik s Cube in seconds and being a master chess player. Some of his other hobbies were sailing, saltwater fishing, playing X-Box and snowmobiling.

Southbury teen dies after Jeep veers off road, lands in Pomperaug River

Republican-American 3283 SOUTHBURY Police say a 17-year-old was killed in a one-car crash on Roxbury Road at about 10:30 p.m. Monday. Ryan Anthony Rutledge of Southbury was driving a 2020 Jeep Wrangler west, toward Crook Horn Road, when he veered off the right side of the road and went through the wire rope guardrail, down an embankment and into the Pomperaug River, according to police. Rutledge and his female passenger, a 16-year-old from Woodbury, were ejected from the Jeep, police said. The school district sent a message to students and parents informing them both victims are Pomperaug High School students. Rutledge and his passenger were in the water when police arrived. Rutledge was pronounced dead at the scene.
