KIGALI, May 27 (Xinhua) French President Emmanuel Macron started his visit to Rwanda on Thursday.
The visit, the second to the African country by an incumbent French president since the Rwandan genocide in 1994, is seen as a major step to normalize relations between the two sides.
The following are some key facts about Rwanda-France relations since the 1994 genocide that claimed more than 1 million lives, mainly ethnic Tutsis:
Since the current ruling political party Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) ended the genocide under the leadership of Rwandan President Paul Kagame and took power, the Rwandan government has been accusing France of backing the genocidal regime government, including arming and training Hutu extremists, and of protecting genocide suspects through the France-led military Operation Turquoise, a claim that was however denied by France.
