Getting to Know U: Freshman Jenna Johnson

Utah women's basketball signed two talented players from Minnesota for the upcoming season. Today we hear from Jenna Johnson, a forward from Medina, Minnesota. Johnson was an ESPN Top 50 recruit out of high school and was rated the No. 7 forward nationally. She was a 4A all-state selection as a junior and a three-time all-conference selection. Johnson averaged 22.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while shooting 67 percent from the floor as a junior. She played AAU for North Tartan and helped the team to the AAU National Championship in 2018.

The St. Thomas women s basketball coach had offered just one instruction: Follow your conscience. Before tipoff against Concordia (Moorhead), as they awaited the national anthem, Sinn and her team listened intently as the public address announcer read a statement. The MIAC and the University of St. Thomas would like to recognize that the American experience has not been the same for everyone under the flag, it said. As we continue the fight for equality and justice for all, we now invite you to respectfully express yourself for the playing of our national anthem.

When it finally arrived Wednesday, at Hamline s historic Hutton Arena, the junior guard suddenly felt the urge to look back. The Tommies had played in that old gym since the days of woolen uniforms and canvas high-tops. With their impending move to NCAA Division I, Nelson realized the season opener marked the beginning of the end for their 100 years of membership in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He and his teammates were closing a long chapter of St. Thomas history that night, a milepost that wasn t lost on him.
