An 89-Year-Old Ohio grandmother and matriarch of a family spanning five generations, who was affectionately known as “Mama,” was fatally shot while she was at a relative s home planning her son’s funeral, according to a report. Ruth “Mama” Lewis, was sitting in her wheelchair in the living room on Sunday when a bullet came through the window. Lewis was struck at least once in the back and pronounced dead a short time later, the Associated Press reported.

“She was full of life, my mom was full of life,” Patricia Lewis Mallory told the Tribune Chronicle. “She managed to smile through all of that hurt. She was in a wheelchair, she couldn’t walk, she couldn’t talk. But she still managed to show that beautiful smile.” Lewis was the matriarch of her family, consisting of kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and great-great-grandkids that numbered in the range of 150. Her family referred to her as “Mama.” Her family says she was active in the church as an evangelist. She was also an entrepreneur. Lewis and her late husband Robert Lewis founded R&R BBQ and she owned a beauty shop called Magic Mirror.

rsmith@tribtoday.com WARREN Councilman Ron White is asking the police and city administration to increase patrols in the west side neighborhoods around Starlite Drive, after an 89-year-old wheelchair-bound woman was shot inside 3178 Starlite Drive NW. White, D-7th Ward, said he had known Ruth “Mama” Lewis for most of his life. “There has been an increasing level of violence in the area,” the White said. “I would like to have more of an increased police presence. Not just for right now, but for patrol officers to continue to have a presence here.” The councilman said he has been hearing that the shooting was retaliation involving some of younger people in the neighborhood.
