and this laid the groundwork for what eventually became the lowndes county freedom organization. at this point, alabama was horrible in terms of its literacy rates. and so political symbols were very important because instead of being able to read your candidates names, you d look for the symbol. the symbol for the white democratic party in lowndes county was a white rooster, -with the motto -(rooster crows) white supremacy for the right , emblazoned around it. - [wendell] so then if you are voting under that white rooster banner, then you really for voting for white supremacy. - [hasan] and so we ask ruth howard, another sncc veteran to help us out,
and ruth howard thinks about it and goes away and comes back. and she presents to the folk of lowndes county, a soaring white dove. (dove coos) and they look at sister ruth and they re like, you know what? we appreciate the effort. however, this is not about peace right now. this is about power. so she takes a trip back to snccs headquarters in atlanta. and while she s there, she makes note of the mascot for clark college, which is a black panther. and she presents the snarling leaping black panther to the folk of lowndes county. and they re like, there you go. this is what we re talking about. right? john hulett would say, cats are peaceful animals until they are backed into a corner. and when they re backed into a corner, they come out fighting for life or death. and that s the situation that we find ourselves in. - and our intentions was not to get out and be rowdy. we just wanted an emblem and that served our purpose,
