With both the Utah 2019 World Championships gold
and silver medallists out of this week’s Aspen 2021 world champs due to injury, and with no other women’s champions from years past slated to drop in on competition, we’re ensured of seeing a brand-new World Champion by the end of the day on Friday.
Estonia’s Kelly Sildaru will not be competing this week after injuring her knee in training for the X games big air at the end of January, while Cassie Sharpe of Canada suffered an injury mid-competition at X Games - though she still did enough before she went down to earn silver there.

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has confirmed the Russian team participating at upcoming World Championships will be referred to as the Russian Ski Federation (RSF).
The FIS Council approved the measure during an online meeting this week.
International Federations have had to implement measures after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld sanctions imposed on Russia by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in December.
The CAS halved the sanction period from four years to two, but Russia must compete as neutrals at World Championships and the Olympic Games.
Federations must now regard them as neutral teams, separate from the Russia name.

So many moving parts when considering Alexander Bolshunov’s aggression towards Joni Mäki of Finland in the closing moments of the men’s 4 x 7.5-kilometer relay in Lahti on January 24. The finish line was in sight for the two skiers as Mäki came around the sweeping left-hand turn into the final straight ahead of Bolshunov. Mäki, it seemed, sensing Bolshunov making a move and advancing in the outermost right lane, carried momentum towards Bolshunov, and closed the door on the Russian’s progress. In a moment, Bolshunov became unglued. He swung a pole at Mäki, and after crossing the finish line, he barreled into the Finn, knocking him down.
