The Nutcracker Suite on Jazz with Andy O

Share One of the lesser-known holiday traditions at KUVO JAZZ is the yearly airing of “The Nutcracker Suite” on Christmas Day. It’s not just any Nutcracker. It’s the Ellington & Strayhorn version. To call it an arrangement doesn’t do the piece justice. There is composition involved in this jazziest of reimaginings. The Ellington Nutcracker was written and arranged in 1960 with the lion’s share of the arranging by Billy Strayhorn. On the original recording the album cover features three names as co-creators Tchaikovsky, Ellington and Strayhorn. It was the first time Strayhorn’s name and picture appeared on an Ellington album cover. At that time an openly gay black man born in 1915 would have been shunned if he rose to fame and prominence so he worked in the background. Ellington paid for Strayhorn’s expenses and supervised his work, but The Duke did not dictate Billy’s projects. Duke was famous and accepted as a “Black Genius” and showman and leader

Boston Ballet s The Gift is a welcome one - The Boston Globe

Boston Ballet’s ‘The Gift’ is a welcome one By Jeffrey Gantz Globe Correspondent,Updated December 17, 2020, 4:06 p.m. Email to a Friend In Boston Ballet s The Gift, Chyrstyn Fentroy performs in “Arabesque Cookie.”Brooke Trisolini (Custom credit) For the second of its six virtual presentations of the 2020–2021 season, Boston Ballet is offering “The Gift” — and a very handsome one. The music for this holiday celebration is Duke Ellington’s 1960 “Nutcracker Suite,” jazz arrangements of the Tchaikovsky score by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Five company dancers plus a BB2 member and a BB School post graduate choreographed the nine selections, which were performed in the studio this month by a cast of more than 50. Boston Ballet’s dancers have always excelled at kicking up their heels, so this program is right up their alley.

The Nutcracker Reworked - Review - The Royal Ballet, Winter 2020

The Royal Ballet  performs The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House Seeing a live performance of The Nutcracker is a favourite Christmas treat for me.  But, it is one which I’ve scarcely dared hope will happen when our theatres have been mothballed for months, dancers have hung up their shoes and musicians tucked up their instruments for a long hibernation.  This year though, the magic of the Nutcracker has been reworked into a COVID safe restaging which all but sold out the moment tickets went on sale, though you might be lucky and find a return for one of the 17 performances between 11th December and 3rd January 2021.  Based on Peter Wright’s two-act production, the restaging has been carefully designed and while it includes much of the original production, there’s a new battle scene between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King choreographed by Will Tuckett.
