Federal agency deems TIAA’s land holdings in Brazil legally null and void
A technical report by Brazil’s land reform agency INCRA has deemed TIAA’s land titles in Brazil to be legally null and void. This conclusion is discussed in a new report by Rede Social, the Lawyer’s Association for Rural Workers (AATR), and GRAIN. TIAA (The Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America) is the largest international farmland investor operating in Brazil’s Cerrado. It invest in rural properties through a complex web of intermediary companies, which includes capital investments in Radar S/A. Radar was originally set up as a joint venture with Brazilian sugar company Cosan S/A. TIAA ultimately holds 100 percent of the preferred shares and has provided 97 percent of Radar’s capital.

Retail Inflation for Farm, Rural Workers Eases in December Due to Low Food Prices

Retail inflation for farm and rural workers eased to 3.25 per cent and 3.34 per cent, respectively, in December, mainly due to lower prices of certain food items. Point to point rate of inflation based on the CPI-AL (Consumer Price Index-Agricultural Labourers and CPI-RL (rural labourers) decreased to 3.25 per cent and 3.34 per cent in December 2020 from 6 per cent and 5.86 per cent respectively in November 2020, a labour ministry statement said.
According to the statement, inflation based on the food index of CPI-AL and CPI-RL is at (+) 2.97 per cent and (+) 2.96 per cent, respectively, in December 2020. Among states, the maximum decrease in the consumer price index numbers for agricultural labourers and rural workers was experienced by Gujarat and West Bengal (-20 points each) mainly due to the fall in prices of gur, onion, green chillies, vegetables and fruits etc.
TRADE union leader Felix Vasquez was assassinated on Saturday at his home in Ocotal, La Paz, Honduras.
The Lenca indigenous leader was secretary-general of the Union of Rural Workers and a parliamentary candidate for the Liberty and Refoundation party of former president Manuel Zelaya, who was overthrown in a military coup in 2009.
Mr Zelaya tweeted that he “condemned the murder of Felix Vasquez, indigenous leader, defender of rivers and forest.”
Four men in balaclavas entered his home at 8.30pm on Saturday armed with a pistol and machetes, killing him and “terrorising” his family.
Mr Vasquez had recently joined demonstrations calling for the release of another indigenous leader, Victor Vasquez, who was imprisoned for campaigning against the exploitation of indigenous lands.
