CABI has led the first study to explore the income and food security effects of the fall armyworm invasion on a country - revealing that in Zimbabwe smallholder maize-growing households blighted by the pest are 12% more likely to experience hunger.
Dr Justice Tambo, lead researcher of the study published in
Food and Energy Security, sought to investigate the impact of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) on household income and food security as well as the extent to which a control strategy can help mitigate the negative impacts of the pest.

been flattened. it include a couple of schools, a hotel and many offices. it really does look pretty desperate out there. they are rushing in troops and armed police to help in the rescue effort. for the tibetan region i mentioned here that a neighboring province, sichuan province, has a deadly quake a couple years ago. killed almost 90,000 people. have the standards for building at all changed since then? well, this is a far more rural area than the area hit by the sichuan earthquake. that was then a fairly big town. this is really a very remote, rural settlement. there s 70,000 people. a lot of the towns, a lot of the buildings are fairly traditional and wood and mud structures. i don t think it s really a question of building codes. it s just mud and wood really doesn t hold up very well. andrew, thank you very much for sharing what you ve been able to learn so far. we ll look forward to more
