The currency had touched an intra-day high of 83.2525 early on Friday helped by inflows, but dollar demand from local oil companies and importers eroded some of the local unit s early gains, traders said.
The rupee gained 33 paise to 81.77 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday supported by sustained foreign fund inflows and bullish momentum in domestic equities as benchmark indices touched all-time highs.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.01 per cent to 101.51. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.27 per cent to USD 78.58 per barrel
