His press secretary emailed Reuters a statement that said: "All steps will be taken to mitigate the risk of spillover of Nipah virus and other emerging infections from their reservoir hosts to humans while planning development activities in the State." The statement cited ongoing efforts by the state to map ecologically vulnerable areas and a planned initiative by two Indian universities, funded by the U.S. government, to improve surveillance of animals and people for Nipah and other zoonotic viruses.
