insurrectionists stormed in the nation s capital on an unprecedented attack on our democracy, but images are not any easier to watch but an important reminder how close we came to losing our democracy and how fragile democracy remains. tucker: imagine being in charge of running msnbc. it d be super easy. you look over at the bane and there are all these terms of language preassembled and you threw them together and that would be tonight s script. the insurrectionist! the unprecedented attack on our democracy! all the cliches. what is it really about. it s not lying or propaganda, but what is it really about? it s about preserving the power of the party. and if there is any doubt whatsoever and you may have missed this, dick cheney showed up on capitol hill yesterday and democrats who spent decades announcing him as a war criminal applauded him. we saw liz cheney, the
running nbc. so steve cap is the head of nbc news, that will have a much more influence over msnbc, and this may be part of it. it was no secret that steve was particularly upset, justifiably so, with how keith handled the suspension earlier this year and the donations. and phil griffin took a little bit of a different tack than steve probably would have liked. but you re probably seeing now steve influencing msnbc a lot more than say a week ago. bill carter, we mentioned this earlier and i think it was you reporting it. but in terms of his contract, does he get paid for essentially will they keep him off the air somewhere else if they just pay him out for the next two years? the answer is he will be kept off the air, probably not for two years but for a sustained period of time. he can do radio and internet, but not television.
even though he had a lot of fans on the left who are going to be disappointed he s out of there. david schuster, he was incredibly important for msnbc and really put msnbc on the map. i mean, they had gone through i don t know how many people on the air in primetime for years and years and years, and keith olberman is the one who really made their primetime happen. that s absolutely true. but one thing to keep in mind, it s going to be fascinating to see what msnbc does next. keith essentially designed countdown and the show but he was instrumental in straining some incredible staff. who are still there to this day some incredible staff. who are still there to this day. rachel maddow and i used to joke when we used to substitute for keith olberman, it was like taking the ferrari out. our job was just not to wreck the car. keith would drive that car better than anybody, but it is a well-oiled machine, well produced show, countdown. there s a lot there that i think still resonate
he s not a guy who is about money. if he felt like for whatever reason this was a time to leave, i guaranty that money is not an issue for him. i just feel bad i don t know him personally, but for someone who clearly has a strong opinion, it would be a very difficult thing to be off the air, you noef, at such an important time in this country s history, david. well, yes and no. but he s gone down this road before. he s worked he left msnbc following the monica lewinsky scandal back in 898. he worked and espn and fox. so he s gotten used to having his breaks between his successes. keith is a very smart guy. a lot of organizations would be wise to talk to him and see, okay, what could he possibly do next, whether it s radio or tv. he s such a super talent, and he is good to work with. that s a combination that i think he has a bright future regardless and it will be on his
said, uhh, can you cut it down to 15 seconds to we can get in this tennis result? so i m grateful i have a little more time to sign off here. and he did take his time. then he said good night and goodbye. chris hayes filling in for rachel mad do you is next. again, all of my greatest thanks. widen the shot out a little bit. good night, and good luck. keith olberman signing off tonight. his former network releasing a statement, msnbc and keith olberman have sended their contract. the last broadcast will be this evening. msnbc thanks keith for his entry call role at msnbc s success and we wish him well in his future endeavors. the network president also sending out an e-mail outlining the new primetime schedule.
