Read Article William L. “Bill” Petrie MEXICO – Mr. William L. “Bill” Petrie, 82, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2021, at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He resided on Middle Avenue in Mexico. Born in Rumford, on Oct. 12, 1938, he was the son of Leo and Laura (Ross) Petrie. He graduated from Mexico High School and studied Mechanical Engineering at Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as a Ground Radio Equipment Repairman from 1961 to 1965 attaining the rank of Airman 2nd Class. He served at several Air Force bases including a tour in Ankara, Turkey. Bill worked for 44 years in the paper mill in Rumford until his retirement, the last 35 years in the Meter Department. As a retiree, Bill took on a part-time job at Sunday River and was known as “Basket Check Bill�

Read Article Barbara Stearns Gross HANOVER – Barbara Stearns Gross, 85, passed away on Jan. 16, 2021 at the Rumford Community Home. Barbara was born Dec. 24, 1935, “On the Farm” in Hanover, Maine. Barbara was the daughter of Roy and Helen (Damon) Stearns. Barbara was a Hanover resident most of her life. Her early years were spent on the farm climbing rafters, milking cows and throwing hay. Barbara married Malcolm Gross on Sept. 9, 1954. After the ceremony, they moved to North Carolina where Malcolm was stationed at Fort Bragg. After Malcolm’s service to his country was over, Barbara and Malcolm moved to Jefferson, N.H. They also lived in Magaloway, Bethel and Newry, Maine before settling in Hanover, Maine where they raised seven children.
