BHUBANESWAR: BJP national vice-president Baijayant Panda held roadshow and rallies in various panchayats, seeking votes for party candidate Ashrit Pattanayak on the last Sunday before Pipili goes to polls on April 17, even as the BJD made last-minute preparations ahead of party president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik’s virtual rally on Monday. Large LED screens have been installed at Pata Sahanipur, Danda Mukundapur, Kumareswar, Rench, Bada Ankula and Singh Berhampur so that people can listen to the chief minister’s address as he campaigns for BJD candidate Rudra Pratap Maharathy in the bypoll which was necessitated following the death of his father Pradeep Maharathy.

The Congress candidate also appealed to his supporters to stay united and not fall for rumours. Mangaraj fell sick while campaigning on Wednesday and have stayed away since then. Senior Congress leaders like AICC secretary Rudra Raju, former state president Jayadev Jena, Chiranjib Biswal, Taraprasad Bahinipati and Suresh Routray took charge of the party’s campaign in Pipili.

Odisha police on Monday seized around Rs 50 lakh of unaccounted cash near Tarakaja Chhak under Pipili police station in Puri district. The Pipili Assembly constituency is going to witness a bypoll on April 17. Police detained two persons in connection with the incident and seized a motorcycle. Sources said during routine check on Monday afternoon near the Pipili check gate, police asked two persons riding a motorcycle to stop. But instead of stopping they sped away. Police chased them and seized the money from their possession. A ruling Biju Janata Dal delegation met the chief electoral officer and lodged a complaint about attempts by rival parties to influence voters by adopting unfair means.
