Hopewell hands out water cases in midst of mandated use restriction

HOPEWELL Rudolph Roquemore woke up at 5 a.m. Monday to find his house had no water service. The water company did call, maybe five minutes later, with a message saying all the residents in Hopewell had no water, Roquemore recalled. We were advised at the time to come to the high school where they were giving out, you know, water rations. Roquemore s vehicle was one of hundreds that snaked their way from Patrick Copeland Elementary and Hopewell High schools down South Mesa Drive and West Broadway to pick up cases of bottled water from Virginia American Water Company, which serves 9,500 customers across Hopewell and adjacent neighborhoods in Prince George County. VAWCO s water processing station on Riverside Drive suffered what officials called a catastrophic failure as a result of the weekend ice storm, prompting the city to issue a mandatory restriction on use of water for showering, bathing, dishwashing and laundry.
