Inside the $194m private art museum that cements Francois Pinault as a titan of French culture  It s been a 20-year-long project, but the billionaire s enduring ambition has finally come to fruition The Bourse de Commerce opened this week in Paris The opening of the art museum of luxury goods billionaire Francois Pinault was always going to be a major Parisian event. The fact that Bourse de Commerce’s launch, on 22 May, ended up coinciding with the easing of a six-month lockdown only added to the hype.  Tickets are completely sold out until the first week of July. On a visit earlier this week, the five-floor building was abuzz, inasmuch as distancing restrictions allow, with curious visitors of all ages, and in outfits occupying all points on the casual to formal spectrum.

Pinault had his eyes on an island in the middle of the Seine in the well-to-do suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt, but the mayor, Libération reported, “didn’t roll out the red carpet.” Apparently, it was only when then-President Jacques Chirac intervened on Pinault’s behalf during an Elysée garden party, and the reluctant mayor green-lighted the museum.
