Grief support group to resume in-person meetings

Itâs OK to cry. Whether youâve lost loved ones to COVID-19, old age or other ailments, the long-time Green Valley-area Good Grief support group may help you get through the worst of trying to adjust to life without them. The group is moving back to the Friends in Deed building on Camino Casa Verde, where it will continue meeting weekly on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon, starting May 4. The meetings are led by Deb Jones and offer an atmosphere in which attendees may share, listen, do a bit of both, and for sure, cry if theyâre moved to. They are open to anybody whoâs lost a loved one, said Ruby Payne, a retired nurse who lost her husband 17 months ago to COPD. Another frequent attendee lost a husband and young child to cancer; another has lost a string of relatives over time.

Sandston Elementary receives national honor for serving its homeless and economically disadvantaged population

When Kim Powell became the principal of Sandston Elementary, the school was only partially accredited because too many kids were falling behind in reading and math. She was determined to keep her finger on the pulse of what could be causing her students to struggle. Sheâll be the first to admit that she didnât understand much about the circumstances of the students attending her school, where about six out of 10 students are economically disadvantaged. After a lot of hard work, dedication and insight, the school has been fully accredited since 2017, and Powell has led Sandston Elementary to be one of two schools selected by the Virginia Department of Education as a Distinguished School under the National Association of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Sandston received the award for serving its homeless and economically disadvantaged population.
