Johannesburg - The City of Joburg mayor, Geoffrey Makhubo, is in receipt of a report from the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) on allegations of financial misconduct and corruption at the Joburg Property Company (JPC), especially related to the Covid-19 response expenditure.
A senior official at the JPC allegedly awarded personal protective equipment contracts irregularly, costing the municipality at least R18 million in fruitless and wasteful expenditure last year.
The tender in question was awarded to four companies for deep cleaning and sanitisation services during the national state of disaster in light of the Covid-19 outbreak, according to the SIU report.
The Special Investigation Unit, which was mandated by President Cyril Ramaphosa to probe the misappropriation of public funds related to governmentâs multibillion rand Covid-19 expenditure, has found that five senior employees of the Joburg Property Company, including its chief executive and chief financial officer, might be guilty of financial misconduct in the awarding of contracts to provide deep-cleaning and sanitisation services File Picture

Johannesburg - Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has been urged to probe Joburg mayor Geoff Makhubo following his adviserâs appointment as acting chief executive of the Joburg Property Company (JPC).
Mkhwebaneâs probe comes after businessman and politician Kenny Kuneneâs complaint about Ruby Mathangâs appointment to oversee one of the cityâs biggest budgets.
Kunene contends that this represents a dangerous conflict of interest and gives Makhubo direct control of a major City-owned entity that oversees a multibillion-rand budget in the city.
Mkhwebaneâs spokesperson Oupa Segalwe said the office had received the complaint and they would be assessing it.
