The 28 September 2023 pre-conference sessions "Reaching the marginalized through a PHC approach towards ending communicable diseases" will provide a platform for a dynamic conversation between WHO leadership, representatives from community based organizations and primary health care (PHC) professionals connecting strategies, community experiences and the PHC workforce.
Between 6-10% of reported MPX cases will require hospital admission. Most common reasons for admission are pain management (usually related to proctitis or tonsillitis), inability to swallow, urine retention, encephalitis or complications including bacterial infection. Pregnant women, young children and immunosuppressed patients are reported as at higher risk of complications. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 16 individuals were reported death in Latin America and the Caribbean associated to this disease.
