MLK/FBI Offers a Nuanced Portrait of Martin Luther King Jr

To revist this article, visit My Profile, then View saved stories. Martin Luther King Jr. probably had too much faith in the decency of America. In director Sam Pollard’s new documentary MLK/FBI, close friends and family of the murdered civil rights leader say he dismissed concerns that government authorities, under the direction of J. A half century later, it’s the FBI that’s wracked with shame over its conduct in the documentary (distributed by IFC and executive produced by, among others,

Billie Eilish Interview: The Pop Star on Finneas, Her Grammy Wins, Joe Biden, and More

Advertisement In photos she smolders or glowers or sulks. Her music videos are awash in black liquids streaming from her eyes, oil spills, burn marks, tarantulas, disembodied hands clawing at her face. Finneas has worked the sickening whiz of a dentist’s drill and the wet suck of Eilish removing her Invisalign into her songs. There is an extreme teen-ness to her, which elicits the same sort of rebukes bestowed upon other young stars (Kristen Stewart, most notably) who haven’t taken fondly to instant fame. A screenshot of Eilish, her lip curled in what appears to be confused derision, went viral seemingly nanoseconds after she made the expression during Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph’s performance at the 2020 Academy Awards, drawing instant ire for her apparent dis of our comedic lords and saviors. But the Twitter takedowns left out context: Eilish had been smiling up at the performance until she caught sight of herself on a giant screen. At the Grammys, following her sweep of e

To revist this article, visit My Profile, then View saved stories. Last Thursday, a friend texted me to tell me that the Standard in Hollywood was permanently shuttering after 22 years on the Sunset Strip. Like most of my friends and enemies, he knew that I carried a torch for this particular hotel. It was the original boutique hotel. The logo on the outside of the building was upside down. The keycards said, “Slip it in.” The valets wore ’90s alternative-rock-style work shirts; they were friendly and a little bit too good-looking. You could relax on the beige Ligne Roset Togo sofa in the lobby while a DJ spun tasteful electronic music and a scantily clad out-of-work actor lazily read a script in the “the Box” behind the front desk. You could eat adequate diner food 24 hours a day; you could float on a pink tube in the tiny pool; you could play ping-pong on blue Astroturf; you could hear the traffic on Sunset at all hours if you got the wrong room; you coul
