Meteors
The Coma Berenicids, running now through Saturday, Jan. 23, are the first shower of the year but they are guaranteed to be superseded by what will probably be the best shower of January, if not the year: the Quantarids, a.k.a. as the Bootids, from Friday, Jan. 1 to Tuesday, Jan. 5, peaking on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 120 per hour. The catch is that this is under a nearly full or full moon.
Two other showers also start on Friday, Jan. 1, the Gamma Velids, lasting until Friday, Jan. 15, with a peak of 2 per hour on Tuesday, Jan. 5. and the Delta Cancrids lasting until Sunday, Jan. 31, peaking Sunday, Jan. 17 at 3 per hour.
