dan, what is going on with the pledge of allegiance in eugene? reporter: well, yeah, gregg, you would think it is a simple proposal, to say the pledge of allegiance before every city council meeting but in you giant nothing is that easy, the mayor called the idea and the pledge divisive and you had letters to the editor, were on fire here and one lady was saying she could not in good conscious say the pledge of allegiance because that is showing loyalty to one country and she is a citizen of the world. ultimately, the city council took up the issue, last night and rejected the proposal, 5-2. saying they could not say the pledge before every meeting but, after even more debate they passed a compromise saying the pledge could be said before meetings close to patriotic holidays like the fourth of july, flag day, memorial day and veterans day. one councilman who even voted against the compromise said the pledge had no place at city hall. people can say that in public if they want, thei
