Last May, at the peak of my lockdown despair, I bought myself an emerald and diamond ring. It wasn’t the most practical pandemic purchase, it wouldn’t make up for the horror show that was 2020, and I’ve had scant opportunities to show it off. But spending some of the money I’d saved for my now indefinitely postponed wedding and honeymoon on a piece of jewellery that I’ll wear forever did bring a sort of macabre cheer. Perhaps one day my grandchildren will call it ‘Granny’s Covid emerald’. And I’m far from the only one who turned to fine jewellery at the most seemingly absurd time.
