Grateful residents have paid tribute to one of Honiton’s unsung heroes who looks after ditches, drains and banks on country lanes near the town.
Retired dairy farmer Brian Clapp is a volunteer banksman who for the last three or four years has single-handedly carried out maintenance work on Honiton Bottom Road, Stoney Lane and the roads to Blannicombe and Roundball Hill – helping to minimise flooding.
Brian, who is 68 and lives at Middlehills Farm, has never sought any recognition for his community-spirited endeavours but residents who use those lanes – especially in recent months for their permitted lockdown exercise – have come forward to sing his praises.
