There has been “a significant ransomware attack” on the Health Service Executive’s (HSE) IT systems.
The HSE said it has taken the “precaution” of shutting down all its IT systems in order to “protect them from this attack and to allow us fully assess the situation with our own security partners”.
As a result there are expected to be cancellations and disruption to some services at a number of hospitals with futher clarification expected in the coming hours.
HSE chief executive Paul Reid said officials were working with the Garda, the Defence Forces and third party cyber security experts to respond to the attack.
An Garda SÃochána said the HSE was the lead agency in dealing with the attack but it was liasing with the health body and the National Cyber Security Centre.
Minister of State for Communications Ossian Smyth TD told RTÃ radioâs News at One that he had been briefed by the National Cyber Security Centre on the attack but for operational reasons could not share everything he knew.
He said it appeared to have been an attempt to lock the HSE out of its own systems in order to steal data and then try to extract a ransom.

HSE
After hospital administrators became aware of a cyberattack late Thursday, Ireland s public health care system, known as the Health Service Executive or HSE, shut down all its computer systems nationwide.
The attack is classified as a ransomware hack, but it is unclear whether the hackers were successful in obtaining enough data to lock up. Ransomware hackers steal data that has not been backed up and refuse to return it until a ransom is paid. The most recent example is the case of the Colonial Pipeline hack in the United States, with $5 million was allegedly paid yesterday.
