While the members of Dáil Éireann return from their winter break this week, those on the pickets at Rosslare Harbour have remained in situ throughout the festive period and into the New Year. Their campaign to see the Great Southern Hotel transformed into a nursing home and not an International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) began in October of last year and has seen members of the local community take up residence outside the building site’s two main entrances with a further picket near the Europort.
While the Jeremy Clarkson version serves the best hamburgers in the world and the host’s very own Hawkstone beer, the Rosslare Municipal District’s (RMD) resources are, unfortunately, more limited. Offering fellow councillors an insight into his viewing habits of an evening, Councillor Ger Carthy referenced his favourite show when discussing housing shortages in the RMD.
