Manchin flexes muscle in 50-50 Senate

Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) is the most pivotal vote in the evenly divided Senate, and his power could spark prolonged intraparty feuds among Democrats. Concerned about simmering friction, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday strongly urged his Democratic caucus to unify around a pending $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package. Manchin appears to have derailed President Biden s nominee to head the White House budget office, Neera Tanden, by announcing last week that he would vote against her because of sharp criticisms she leveled on Twitter against Senate colleagues. In a 50-50 Senate, Tanden now needs the backing of at least one Republican, and perhaps more, which appears unlikely.

Senate GOP boxes itself in on impeachment

The vote boxes in the overwhelming majority of the Senate Republican Conference into supporting Trump s acquittal on a single article of impeachment before the House managers and Trump s lawyers have even filed their pre-trial briefs. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), one of only a handful of GOP senators actively considering whether to vote to convict Trump, on Tuesday said it s now hard to imagine there will be anything close to the 67 votes needed to convict Trump.

Op-Ed: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas resonates in 2020

By Ross K. Baker Radio stations that feature Christmas songs at this time of year will play many times and by many different artists a song from a popular film that premiered in 1944. “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” was sung by Judy Garland in the movie “Meet Me in St. Louis,” about a family forced to move from their beloved home in St. Louis by their father’s transfer to New York. Judy Garland sings the song to her younger sister, played by Margaret O’Brien, to comfort her about the impending move. Unlike most Christmas sings that are cheery but emotionally shallow, this song captures the pain and sacrifice that so many American families were enduring in that dreadful winter of 1944 although the war itself is not mentioned. It is a song uniquely suited to Christmas 2020, overshadowed like Christmas 1944 by death and grief and uncertainty.

President Trump has threatened to veto the legislation, and Republican senators weighing White House bids are being careful not to cross him. Sens. Josh Hawley (Mo.), Tom Cotton (Ark.), Ted Cruz (Texas) and Rand Paul (Ky.) - four GOP senators who are potential presidential candidates in 2024 - voted against the legislation that passed with overwhelming bipartisan support on Friday.
