Sofia metro underground transit system’s extension to Gorna Banya borough went into service on April 24, adding four new stations and a connection to the railway line serving south-western Bulgaria.
Sofia mayor Yordanka Fandukova said that that an estimated 50 000 people were expected to make use of the extension, which is expected to decrease car traffic in the area by 25 per cent, allowing residents along the new section of metro line 3 to reach the city centre in 12 minutes.
As part of the construction, Sofia authorities have built or modernised five km of city boulevards and built three parking lots with 700 cars capacity, she said. The new section is four km and takes the total length of Sofia’s metro network to 52km.

In the 45th National Assembly, Borissov’s GERB has 75 out of 240 seats. The other five parties and coalitions in Parliament have said that they would not support a new GERB government.
During his presentation of the proposed GERB Cabinet line-up, Borissov called on Mitov to hold the talks with other political parties in Parliament as quickly as possible.
“Take the mandate, we have a duty to talk it out … On Thursday [April 22], we will announce whether we have achieved something or not,” he said during a Facebook livestream.
After the mandate-handing ceremony, Mitov told reporters that GERB extend invitations for talks to centre-right Democratic Bulgaria and cable television presenter Slavi Trifonov’s ITN.
Bulgaria’s Transport Minister Rossen Zhelyazkov signed on April 9 an annex to the concession contract for Sofia Airport, which granted operator Sof Connect a postponement on the payment of annual concession fees for the first 10 years of the contract.
In a statement, Zhelyazkov said that the annex was meant to “restore the economic balance of the concession, disrupted by Covid-19, the balance between the benefits and risks undertaken by the two sides.”
The proposed annex to the
concession contract, made public earlier this week, drew opposition from several parties and coalitions set to enter the next National Assembly after the April 4 elections.
