He was taken to the hospital and did not make it. The officers had no warning about what was coming. What we can tell from looking at the scene is that it doesnt appear that either officer had opportunity to interact with the suspect. It doesnt look like there was an exchange of conversation here there definitely was not an opportunity for the officers to defend themselves or to respond to the attack.
