Herald-Star staffers earn accolades from OAPME | News, Sports, Jobs

From staff reports COLUMBUS Members of the Herald-Star staff earned two second-place awards and a third-place award in the 2020 Ohio Associated Press Media Editors newspaper contest. Executive Editor Ross Gallabrese finished second in the best editorial writer category. Ed Puskas of the (Ashtabula) Star Beacon finished first in the category, while Benjamin Lanka of The (Newark) Advocate was third. Inside the Paint, our annual high school basketball preview edition, earned second-place honors in the best special sports section category. The Medina Gazette’s Fall Football Preview finished first in the category, while The (Celina) Daily Standard’s Fall Sports Preview was third.

Newspaper staffers named 2020 Ohio APME award finalists | News, Sports, Jobs

From staff reports COLUMBUS Members of the Herald-Star staff have been selected as finalists in the 2020 Ohio Associated Press Media Editors newspaper contest. Executive Editor Ross Gallabrese is a finalist in the best editorial writer category, and the newspaper is a finalist in the best special sports section and best daily sports section categories. “We’re proud of the work performed by our entire staff,” said John Hale, publisher of the newspaper. “They are dedicated to their profession, and it’s good to see that their efforts and hard work have been recognized.” Three finalists in each of the contest categories were named Tuesday. The actual order of finish will be announced during a virtual awards program planned for this spring. The Herald-Star competes in Division II, which includes newspapers with a daily circulation between 8,000 and 11,999.

Scenes of the Ohio Valley Photo Contest | News, Sports, Jobs

From staff reports STEUBENVILLE The Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times are looking for area residents who have been able to capture the spirit of our region in photographs. They are doing that through the Scenes of the Ohio Valley Photo Contest. Six winners each will have their photographs published in the newspapers and each will receive a $25 gift card from a business in the Ohio Valley. “This contest offers a great way for our readers to get involved with the newspapers,” said John Hale, publisher of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times. “We want it to be a showcase of photographs taken by residents from across the region.”
