The sign outside the main entrance to the gym at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School pointed test-takers to another door well off to the side.
From 2 to 4 p.m. on a recent afternoon, the glass double doors at the Newark home of the St. Benedict’s Gray Bees basketball team were for egress only, with the more modest side entrance reserved for people entering the gym.
The pedestrian traffic scheme was intended to avoid close proximity between the St. Benedict’s students, staff and family members heading into the gym for the regular coronavirus testing that began this month and those coming out afterward. Most had spent about a minute inside, where they would check in, get a mouth swab taken, and leave, with their results sent to them in 48 hours.
