In an unusually forceful rebuke, Speaker Adrienne Adams, Comptroller Brad Ladner and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams blasted the mayor over what they see as his wavering commitment to shut down Rikers Island by a 2027 deadline.
As a woman who spent over a year in the Rose M. Singer unit on Rikers, I know how hard the holiday season can be for people in jail, as well as for their families and loved ones. This is a season of joy and togetherness, and it’s so difficult to be away from everything and everyone you hold dear.
