1 year after the first known US coronavirus death, over 450,000 families will never see a loved one again
When Patricia Dowd passed away last February, no one knew it was from Covid-19.
She was 57 and very active, her brother said. Dowd had come down with flu-like symptoms but didn’t qualify for a Covid-19 test because they were scarce and restricted at the time.
In the one year since, more than 450,000 other families have suffered the shock and devastation of losing a loved one to coronavirus. Here are some of their stories:

Mural honors married Grand Prairie teachers who died of COVID-19
Two teachers who devoted their lives to schools are being remembered after their deaths from COVID-19.
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Two much-loved teachers who spent their lives dedicated to others and each other are being remembered after their deaths from COVID-19 with a mural.
Paul and Rosemary Blackwell both taught in Grand Prairie ISD. Their colleagues wanted to do something to honor their legacy.
An artist painted a mural of the couple on the corner of 17th and Small Street in Grand Prairie.
Paul Blackwell taught PE and coached 7th grade boys’ basketball at Fannin Middle School.
Funeral held for married Grand Prairie ISD teachers who both died of COVID-19

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Funeral services were held Monday for a husband and wife who taught in Grand Prairie ISD, and who both died of COVID-19.
Friends, family, students, and parents came together to say goodbye to Paul and Rose Mary Blackwell.
Rose Mary was a 2nd grade teacher at Travis World Language Academy and Paul was a PE teacher and coach at Fannin Middle School.
They both died earlier this month from COVID-19 complications.
