In this imaginative origin story of two of the most beloved characters in literatureâPeter Pan and Alice in Wonderlandâeight-year-old Alice (Keira Chansa), her mischievous brother Peter (Jordan A. Nash) and their brilliant older sibling David (Reece Yates) let their imaginations run wild one blissful summer in the English countryside. Encouraged by their parents Jack (David Oyelowo) and Rose (Angelina Jolie), the kids make-believe tea parties, sword fights and pirate ship adventures come to an abrupt end when tragedy strikes.
Peter, eager to prove himself a hero to his grief-stricken and financially-struggling parents, journeys with Alice to London, where they try to sell a treasured heirloom to the sinister pawnshop owner known as C.J. (David Gyasi). Returning home, Alice seeks temporary refuge in a wondrous rabbit hole while Peter permanently escapes reality by entering a magical realm as leader of the Lost Boys.
Statues are problematic. We throw them up for the great and the good, but they all too easily paper over the bad traits and dirty bibs from which none of us are immune. These are the very things that make the person who is being venerated in bronze, a human rather than a symbol, and if we are able to relate to them on that level, then it only makes their accomplishments all the more incredible.
I thought a lot about monuments watching this documentary portrait of Dublin rock icon Phil Lynott by Emer Reynolds. It made me think just how effectively they can communicate when executed with imagination and dynamism, but also how they can be an accomplishment in themselves.
Running Time:
In
Come Away, we’re introduced to a humble family of five living in the English countryside, complete with supportive parents Rose (Angelina Jolie) and Jack (David Oyelowo), along with their three children David, Peter and Alice.
Billed as a ‘fantasy adventure’,
Come Away does indeed bring a fantastical element when we see the kids using their imaginations whilst playing in the woods, being inspired by the tales of
Peter Pan and
Alice in Wonderland. However, following the tragic and confusingly abrupt death of eldest son David, the family is left broken and struggle to pick up the pieces.
