June 4 Vigil Organizer Says Candles Will Be Lit in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park, Defying Beijing
June 4 this year will mark the 32nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, and it will be the first year since the Chinese regime implemented the national security law in Hong Kong. While a number of democracy activists were given jail terms for participating in last year’s peaceful Tiananmen memorial rally, one organization vowed to hold a candlelight vigil in Victoria Park next month, despite pressure from Beijing authorities.
Hang Tung Chow, a Hong Kong barrister and vice-president of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China (the “Alliance”) said that candles in Victoria Park will be lit as usual regardless of whether or not they get permission from the authorities.

Activist, along with three others, jailed for participation in illegal assembly
Hong Kong s District Court on Thursday sentenced activist Joshua Wong Chi-fung to 10 months in jail for participating in an illegal assembly in June 2020.
The court sentenced three other activists, Lester Shum, Tiffany Yuen Ka-wai and Jannelle Rosalynne Leung, who took part in the same assembly, to six months, four months and four months respectively.
Judge Stanley Chan Kwong-chi determined that the defendants had ignored from the very beginning that the meeting was unlawful under the police s objection issued on June 1, as well as the enormous risk of the assembly to descend into violence.

Hong Kong, May 6 : Jailed Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong was on Thursday sentenced to another 10 months in prison for taking part in an unsanctioned protest last year to mark the anniversary of China s crackdown on the democracy movement on June 4, 1989.
Three district councillors sentenced alongside the 24-year-old activist received between four and six months of jail time, reports dpa news agency.

Imprisoned Hong Kong opposition activist Joshua Wong Chi Fung on Thursday (May 6) was sentenced to 10 months’ jail for taking part in an unauthorised vigil last year commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown .
Three district councillors – Lester Shum, 27, Tiffany Yuen Ka Wai, 27, and Jannelle Rosalynne Leung, 26 – were also sentenced for their roles in the June 4 event in Victoria Park, with Shum receiving six months, and Yuen and Leung getting four months each.
The four pleaded guilty last week to knowingly taking part in an unauthorised assembly, an offence punishable by five years in prison.
