The highly acclaimed modernist painter died suddenly in 1935, aged 48, when “her memory was extinguished like a candle, overnight, just gone,” according to Tracey Lock, curator at the Art Gallery of South Australia. “Her works are spellbindingly beautiful, very tranquil but they have a very strong emotional impact that people can never really walk away from. Her works have been described as ‘aching with feeling’.”
