Alberta budget 2021: Province says it won t penalize school boards for lower enrolment, but nearly 2,000 jobs lost to pandemic won t return

Article content Alberta’s K-12 education funding will remain relatively consistent next school year, but nearly 2,000 education jobs lost during the COVID-19 pandemic are likely not coming back. Operating expenses are forecast to be around $8.2 billion for those grades in the 2021-22 budget, slightly down from last year’s $8.3-million budget, although just under $8.2 billion was used. But provincial budget documents show there are 1,801 fewer full-time support staff jobs and 172 fewer teaching jobs than were originally budgeted for 2020-21. This means the current budget does not account for rehiring staff after the pandemic ends. We apologize, but this video has failed to load.
