TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A respiratory illness called ‘RSV’ is spreading throughout the country and has reached the Wabash Valley.
The first cases in our area were seen in early June.
“Right now we’re now seeing a huge spike in Vigo County going through our daycares and a lot of young ones getting sick with RSV,” said Roni Elder, Vigo County Health Department Health Educator.
RSV is similar to the flu as they share similar symptoms such runny nose, cough or fatigue. However, RSV is almost exclusively a winter illness leaving many in the health community confused as to why the spike of cases is in the summer months.

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) On the same day Hoosiers 65 and older became eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccination, the Vigo County Health Department opened a new, larger vaccination site.
The new site is located at the old Sears location of the Haute City Center. The health department started vaccinations of 60 per day and then to 90 people per day at the original vaccination center at the county Annex.
According to the Vigo County Health Department spokesperson Roni Elder, this new location allows them to vaccinate up to 250 people per day. If you re eligible we want to be able to get an appointment, said Elder. We re here and the Annex just to finish up people who are already scheduled at the Annex and the second doses, so once we finish there we ll be here but we re running both clinics right now.
