An Oregon teen who saved a baby during an ice storm in Portland is being praised for her heroism. Majiah Washington shared her story at a news conference Thursday. The 18-year-old said she noticed a flash outside of her home Wednesday, then opened her blinds and saw a red SUV with a downed power line on it. Her 21-year-old pregnant neighbor screamed at her boyfriend to save the 9-month-old baby who was still in the vehicle. The boyfriend grabbed the baby and headed up a driveway, but then slid on ice and made contact with the live wire. The neighbor and her 15-year-old brother also tried to save the baby and were electrocuted. Washington was able to crouch down and pull the baby free, unharmed.
Storms that have turned roads into icy death traps, frozen people to death from Oregon to Tennessee and even sent a plane skidding off a taxiway were expected.
Forecasters say a second storm is expected to sock New York with snow after causing chaos farther south, while the Pacific Northwest could see another round of deadly ice
The mother, six months pregnant, tried to reach the baby, but she too slipped and was electrocuted. So was her 15-year-old brother, when he came out to help.
