In 1955, William F. Buckley Jr. described conservatives as “the disciples of truth who defend the moral order.” Unfortunately, the GOP is no longer a bastion of truth and moral conservatism, nor is it even a reliable defender of the democratic.

Dec. 26 To the Editor:
The Dec. 26 letter by Ron Sheppe was well worded and thought out, and I quote. “To make matters worse, we are a nation where the propaganda of political ideologues and profit-seekers has brainwashed the IGNORANT and GULLIBLE on a grand scale, thanks to the Internet and those among our mass media and political class who daily bring falsehoods into the homes of millions of people. This constant barrage of falsehoods has deluded those POORLY-EDUCATED members of our society.”
Let me stop there and say that we should not pin this on the ignorant and poorly educated members of our society alone. There are multitudes of WELL-EDUCATED, poor and wealthy, members in the nation, including in Congress, who believe in this propaganda. They are the ones who are contributing to the divisiveness and to the downfall of our democratic principles.
