Mini-budget planned for gas-tax spending
Sarnia city council agreed Monday to craft a mini-budget in the coming weeks on how to spend an extra $2.2 million in federal gas-tax funding.

City staff had recommended waiting until budget deliberations in the fall to figure out on what capital projects to spend the extra money – total gas-tax funding for the city this year is about $4.4 million – but council opted to make earlier spending plans.
“I would just as soon not tie our hands,” Coun. Terry Burrell said. “Just let it flow as it normally would.”

The soldier statue atop Sarnia’s cenotaph will be taking a trip soon to the Greater Toronto Area to be re-armed.
Specialized work is needed to attach a new replica Lee-Enfield rifle, said Tom Klaasen with Memorial Restorations in Sarnia.

Klaasen has been helping co-ordinate the repair project after the original rifle went missing from the statue that dates back to 1922.
Royal Canadian Legion and Sarnia Historical Society officials noticed in early April the rifle was missing. Police later learned the replica was taken from the statue about a year and a half ago.

It turns out the statue at the cenotaph in Sarnia has been unarmed longer than first believed.
Sarnia police said April 12 that officers received information on the weekend, including photos, showing the copper rifle reported missing last week from shoulder of the bronze statue of a First World War soldier atop the cenotaph in Veterans Park has actually been missing for a year and a half.

Police issued a news release last week about the missing rifle after receiving a report about damage to the city’s cenotaph.
