Brainerd police officer Becky Putzke, who was recently honored by the Brainerd Eagles as police office of the year, was center of attention among second-graders at Riverside School when she brought her canine partner, Jack, to visit. Jack is a pure white German shepherd who weighs 93 pounds and loves kids.

Reports of dogs being poisoned – in some cases fatally – from strychnine, are being reported from a neighborhood about four miles west of S. Long Lake. Residents say five dogs have died and another four have recovered. One dog survived poisoning twice. A vet at Lakeland Veterinary in Baxter saw three dogs die and three survive consuming rat poison.
