From blazing the 1960 s New York scene to writing a memoir, Joe Brainard now takes centre stage in a new collaboration with Loewe
Like the first winter crocuses, the bursts of bright floral pattern scattered throughout the Loewe AW 21 menswear collection brought joy to the grey, locked-down days of January 2021. Pansies, specifically: patched onto the collar of a flannel blazer; knit across every inch of jacquard two pieces; or tumbling in a print down the centre of a dramatic, triangular-flare trouser. These motifs were quotations from works by the Joe Brainard, an official collaboration with the late artist’s estate, taken from works such as the gouache

‘Collage’ is an apt way to describe
Jonathan Anderson’s tenure at Loewe thus far. For his conception of the Spanish house has always encompassed much more than just clothing, with exhibitions, artistic collaborations and an ongoing craft prize all part of the rich amalgam of influences which form the designer’s unique worldview.
This past weekend, Anderson used the term to describe his most recent collections – Autumn/Winter 2021 menswear and a women’s pre-collection, as well as sustainable men’s offshoot Eye/LOEWE/Nature – presented via his latest “show-in-a-box”, a concept devised at the very beginning of the pandemic as a Covid-safe way of expressing his vision in lieu of a catwalk show.
