As the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, circulates throughout Virginia, it is more important than ever that people get vaccinated to help protect the vulnerable in their community like children and those who are immunocompromised.

But for many people who rely on facial expressions and lip-reading to communicate, masks also proved to be an effective barrier to understanding. Such was the situation that students in Virginia Tech’s Master of Public Health (MPH) program found themselves in the early days of the pandemic as they served alongside New River Health District staff to help senior citizens living in long-term care facilities.
