Partly in its genesis, hardly the kind of questions that arose, which for me, gave the book a kind of larger scope than i had originally intended. The quotations in the book, the slogans and catch phrases, up until 1955, were easy for me to remember. Because im a child of the 40s and thats what i learned in school. And thats how we learned history in school. Either the books we took out of the library in fourth and fifth grade or the way history was taught. But when i got to graduate school in the 60s, i discovered that some of my fellow students who were, who came from overseas, would come to me periodically and said who is this joe and why should he say it aint so . And so, i told him the story. And later, a friend of hour ours whos an immigrant doctor from south africa came to me and said why do my patients when they see me say whats up doc and laugh ma maniacally sm people who were under 30 had no idea anymore of what these slogans and catch phrases meant. So our series has argued that in aggregate, objects and documents have the singular power to convey a sweeping historical narrative, in our case, the story of the civil war. So harold, now looking back on the book, which inspired the series, the civil war and 50 objects, are there any objects or documents among the plethora of choices we had in new york historics collection that you wish we had been able to include . Oh, from the book . I would say we covered the waterfront pretty well in terms of diversifying the choices. I guess a couple of regrets for time reasons was the handwritten diary of George Templeton strong, perhaps,
Itself. So, for those of you that missed last week program, lets talk about this book, the civil war and 50 objects. How effective do you think it is at conveying the narrative sweep of the civil war in only 50 objects . Well, it came about, as i confessed last week, because louise asked me to undertake the project for the Historical Society. It was a lucky day for me. And youll remember that we got to see, i dont know, three times 50 objects, arrayed before us on some conference tables in the Historical Society. So, it was a matter of picking representative objects, exciting objects, which, as you say, stand in the for the big history of the civil war. Item by item, personal story by personal story. And it was remarkable at the end that we constructed the history of the war from the Abolitionist Movement to the 13th amendment, which abolished slavery. Great. And it was great fun to work with you on that project too. I feel the same. Yeah. So, our topic this evening is fighting slavery
