MADISON, Wis. (AP) â Wisconsin Republicans want to end the $300-per-week federal unemployment supplement, which they said Tuesday hurts businesses that are struggling to fill vacancies as customers return amid a loosening of coronavirus restrictions.
Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Sen. Howard Marklein, chairman of the Legislature s budget committee, called on Democratic Gov. Tony Evers to support the bill they unveiled with the support of a couple of Wisconsin business owners.
Evers, who could veto the bill, signaled his opposition. His spokeswoman Britt Cudaback said, âIf Republicans are interested in putting this pandemic behind us, theyâll stop playing politics with our economic recoveryâ and approve Evers state budget proposal.

Republican lawmakers and business lobbyists joined Tuesday in calling for an end to supplemental federal unemployment pay in Wisconsin blaming the $300 weekly extra payments for labor shortages even though employers have said for years they were struggling to find workers.
The draft legislation is the second of two steps GOP lawmakers are taking to make it harder for applicants to obtain unemployment compensation. On Wednesday, the Joint Committee for the Review of Administrative Rules (JCRAR) will vote on whether to require that people on unemployment resume looking for work every week to qualify for benefits.

Top Republican lawmakers are proposing to end Wisconsin s participation in federal programs that provide more unemployment benefits to residents who lost work due to the coronavirus pandemic in an effort to boost the number of workers in the state.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Joint Finance Committee co-chairman Sen. Howard Marklein proposed legislation Tuesday that would stop paying an additional $300 per week in unemployment benefits, among other pandemic-related benefits. The government needs to quit competing with our local employers. We need a reset here, Marklein said at a press conference in the state Capitol.
The legislation is likely to move quickly. Vos said he wants a hearing on the bill by next week.
